Y toda mi ilusi\u00f3n, por aquel tiempo, estribaba en confundirme con los muchachos de ciudad y carecer de un pueblo que parec\u00eda que le marcaba a uno, como a las reses, hasta la muerte. Y cada vez que en vacaciones visitaba el pueblo, me ilusionaba que mis viejos amigos, que segu\u00edan matando tordas con el tirachinas y cazando ranas en la charca con un alfiler y un trapo rojo, dijeran con desprecio: \u00ab<em>Mira el Isi, va cogiendo andares de se\u00f1oritingo<\/em>\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As\u00ed que, en cuanto pude, me largu\u00e9 de all\u00ed, a <em>Bilbao<\/em>, donde dec\u00edan que embarcaban mozos gratis para el <em>Canal de Panam\u00e1<\/em> y que luego le descontaban a uno el pasaje de la soldada. Pero aquello no me gust\u00f3, porque ya por entonces padec\u00eda yo del espinazo y me doblaba mal y se me antojaba que no estaba hecho para trabajos tan rudos y, as\u00ed de que llegu\u00e9, me puse primero de guardagujas y despu\u00e9s de portero en la <em>Escuela Normal<\/em> y m\u00e1s tarde empec\u00e9 a trabajar las radios <em>Philips<\/em> que dejaban una punta de pesos sin ensuciarse uno las manos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pero lo curioso es que all\u00e1 no me mortificaba tener un pueblo y hasta deseaba que cualquiera me preguntase algo para decirle: \u00ab<em>All\u00e1, en mi pueblo, el cerdo lo matan as\u00ed, o asao<\/em>.\u00bb O bien: \u00ab<em>All\u00e1 en mi pueblo, los hombres visten traje de pana rayada y las mujeres sayas negras, largas hasta los pies<\/em>\u00bb O bien: <em>\u00abAll\u00e1, en mi pueblo, la tierra y el agua son tan calc\u00e1reas que los pollos se asfixian dentro del huevo sin llegar a romper el cascar\u00f3n<\/em>\u00bb O bien: \u00ab<em>All\u00e1, en mi pueblo, si el enjambre se larga, basta arrimarle una escri\u00f1a agujereada con una rama de carrasco para reintegrarle a la colmena<\/em>.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Y empec\u00e9 a darme cuenta, entonces, de que ser de pueblo era un don de Dios y que ser de ciudad era un poco como ser inclusero y que los tesos y el nido de la cig\u00fce\u00f1a y los chopos y el riachuelo y el soto eran siempre los mismos, mientras las pilas de ladrillo y los bloques de cemento y las monta\u00f1as de piedra de la ciudad cambiaban cada d\u00eda y con los a\u00f1os no restaba all\u00ed un solo testigo del nacimiento de uno, porque mientras el pueblo permanec\u00eda, la
